Writing First Resume

"I'm a recent graduate and don't have any experience, how should I write my resume?" Don’t worry. If you start to really think about your background, you’ll be surprised at to know what you have to boast about. The content of your resume is determined by an individual's unique background, skills, and experiences. But as a general guideline following should be included:

  • Skills and experience gained during internships
  • Technical and computer skills
  • Coursework relevant to your desired profession
  • Educational accomplishments
  • Graduate fieldwork
  • Research experience
  • Skills
  • Publications and presentations
  • Language skills
  • Related extracurricular activities
  • Other related accomplishments (awards, recognition, winning competitions etc.)
  • Positive personal characteristics
  • Work History (include volunteer work if it relates to your target positions)
  • Projects and assignments completed during studies (Relevant Only)

The best strategy is to emphasize those things that demonstrate your worth and to leave out those things that don’t. For example, if you are looking to work in Accounts Department of a firm, your skills in Peachtree and  QuickBooks will be important - but the fact that you have won awards for 100 meter Rcae won't! Don't include hobbies unless they directly relate to your goal.
